Oldsmobile Aurora

Welcome to the sound of a different drum. It is a harmony of form, an orchestration of science and art, creating a new concert of elegance and luxury. The Aurora embodies a new individuality that is heard by a special audience, an audience that has chosen it as a best buy among the most luxurious sedans. While all are welcome, frankly, this isn't for everyone.

Comfort and Convenience

Picture of Aurora Convenience Luxury car interiors should be inordinately sensitive to its passengers' desires and demands. Aurora, however, takes sensitivity to a new level. The ergonomic interior is thoughtfully refined and expressly inviting, creating a tasteful and rewarding environment. Aurora's interior seems as if it were created from your personal specifications. From the highly functional ergonomic cockpit, to the innovative and intuitive design and features -- including a state-of-the-art sound system --Aurora creates the perfect atmosphere for driving. That's what it's all about it, isn't it?

Picture of Aurora ConvenienceIt is a beauty wrought out from within. The unique design of Aurora's exterior is the result of a seamless cooperation of science and art, and the consideration of the car as a whole, inside and out. In a world of cookie-cutter design and follow-the-leader styling, Aurora is an original. The distinctive elements of a grille-less front end, aggressive shoulder haunches, pinched waist, fluted rockers and tightly arcing wheel wells have been integrated into a remarkably expressive shape that obliterates convention.

The true beauty of the design, however, is in how the shape and styling of Aurora improves performance. The gentle lines of the body are not products of whimsy or artistic flourish, but arise out of a better understanding of aerodynamics. We'll spare you the scientific complexities, but invite you to experience the artistic simplicity.

Performance

Picture of an Aurora Performance shot For most automobiles, performance is pure science, but Aurora has imbued this aspect with style. During development, Aurora's engine broke 47 speed endurance records, two of which were previously held by Mercedes-Benz. Aurora's 250-hp, 32-valve DOHC V8 engine was engineered to excruciating detail. Which is why it features 4-bolt main bearing caps for strength, and tuned intake runners for power and efficiency. With 90% of peak torque available from 1,700 rpm to 5,600 rpm, Aurora's engine provides the kind of throttle response that negotiates passing maneuvers quickly and with impressive confidence. Because it's designed for a luxury performance sedan, it is also smooth, so smooth in fact that it includes an ignition interlock that prevents drivers' attempts to start the engine when already running. This world-class V8 is the centerpiece of Oldsmobile's motorsports program, including participation in the International Motorsports Association and the Indy Racing League. Aurora's suspension design minimizes road impacts and provides a smoother ride. The patented continuously variable-assist steering system senses vehicle speed and automatically adjusts effort; the innovative variable-compliance bushing for the front lower control arms gives generously in one direction for excellent bump absorption, and becomes stiff in the other direction for precise steering and response.

                                          Safety

In a luxury car, total comfort should be its highest virtue, and Aurora's virtue borders on the heavenly, with features such as an Electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, and an outside passenger-side mirror that automatically tilts down while the car is in reverse. Aurora also has a memory function that recalls one of two preferred positions for driver's seat reach, tilt, and height, and outside rearview mirrors. Few things have been more heavily researched than Aurora's seats; scores of prototypes were painstakingly tested before the design was finalized.

A concept car goes into production
In 1993 the Aurora made it's debut to critical acclaim. This was an attempt by Oldsmobile to save the division after years of poor sales. The new Olds flagship was to save the division and begin a family of faces such as the Intrigue and the Alero. But, after poor promotion (the Oldsmobile name wasn't on the Aurora for three years) and a sagging economy, the Oldsmobile division will be phased out after all.
